Rugby World Cup Church Service
Celebrating our Christian & Rugby Heritage

In 2015, the Welsh and the South African church communities, decided to have a joint church service at Trinity Uniting Church in the City. The purpose of the service was to celebrate our Christian & Rugby Heritage in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup tournament.

People were invited from various rugby communities to attend the service and to wear the supporters gear of their respective nations. The church was decorated with national flags and rugby balls. The service started off with a ceremony in which the lighting of the Christ candle took place. During the ceremony designated supporters for each rugby nation were invited to bring the flag of their respective nation and a tealight candle. The small flag was brought forward and planted on the communion table and the tealight candle was placed in a wooden cross. The Rugby World Cup anthem, The World in Union, was playing during the ceremony. It was explained that on this day, we were unified by our faith heritage in Christ Jesus and also our Rugby heritage in our love for rugby.

We had supporters representing, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Namibia, the USA, Canada and yes, even a person from Japan. As we all know Japan caused the biggest upset ever in the history of the Rugby World Cup. The only countries not represented were Argentina, Uruguay, Russia and Georgia. The church was decorated by flags and videos were shown of memorable moments of the previous World Cup tournaments. There was an interview with a Christian rugby player, playing for the Western Force. The Scripture readings were very applicable to the theme of the sermon that reflected on lessons from Scripture as often seen in the game of rugby.

During morning tea we even had cake that was made by someone with a rugby theme. It was a joyous occasion and we all had great fun.

The 2019 Rugby World Cup tournament in Japan, starts off on the 20th of September. We plan to have such a service again on Sunday 29 September at 10am at Trinity Uniting Church in the City, 72 St Georges Terrace. Please come and join us for this joyful celebration.
