UNITING CHURCH IN THE CITY.  A STATEMENT OF PURPOSE.

We, the congregations of the Uniting Church in the City, affirm our unity in diversity and agree to work together to further God’s mission.

We will create space for new mission and ministry initiatives, relevant to a changing world.

We acknowledge that we are creative participants in the life of the city.

We agree to share our resources with generosity of spirit, and to encourage our leaders to work together in a Ministry Team in order to inspire creativity and provide mutual support.

We celebrate our shared heritage of strong preaching and music ministries, of compassionate responses to community need, and of active participation in public life.

We celebrate the pastoral leadership of elders, the close relationship between minister and members, the focus on worship of almighty God, and the commitment to global mission, which has come to us from our Presbyterian heritage.

We celebrate the emphasis on congregational participation in decision making, the affirmation of the ministry of women, the openness to the community, the generosity of sharing, and the commitment to developing new churches which has come to us from our Congregational heritage.

We celebrate the congregational cultural diversity, the willingness to be doers, taking risks and being innovative,the emphasis on both social justice and evangelism, and the commitment to serve the most needy in our city, which has come to us from the Methodist heritage.

We seek to be churches which proclaim the gospel in word and deed.

Are transparently open to the people who live, work and play in the city.

Speak prophetically in the public domain.

Have doors wide open to welcome all.

Affirm the ministry of all believers.

Are prepared to take risks and make mistakes.

And are filled with excitement and enthusiasm.

This is our treasured hope.

We are on a journey.

We are eager for action.
